1. Hydrate and Moisturise

The key to achieving a natural, long lasting tan is healthy skin. Dry skin resists UV light and is more likely to burn so hydrated skin means quicker absorption of UV light and a greater Tan. Staying hydrated and moisturising is essential as it will help to keep your skin soft. This allows UVB to penetrate into the skin cells and produce melanin (tanning pigment).

We recommend moisturising after bathing or showering when your skin is slightly damp. The moisturising lotion will capture the water that is still on your skin, helping to keep it hydrated for longer. It is also advisable to moisturise after shaving or exfoliating to restore the skin’s normal balance and prevent it from becoming dry.

Stay hydrated with eight glasses of water a day. It sounds like a lot, but we’ve found that including a glass of water with every meal and having a refillable water bottle to sip throughout the day soon hits the spot.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliate for an even, longer-lasting tan. Exfoliating helps to keep skin healthy by removing dead skin cells that can plug follicles after shaving or waxing and cause problems such as acne and ingrown hairs. We recommend exfoliating your skin on a regular basis (around three times a week) to keep your skin hydrated and soft, while creating an even skin tone that will help your tan to last longer.

A gentle touch is important when exfoliating as you only want to remove dead skin cells. If you scrub too hard you may remove healthy skin cells and leave your skin red and sore!

3. Plan Your Tan

The perfect dark tan is well worth the wait, but it does require several sessions to build even a nice base tan. Rushing the process by having the sunbed at too high a temperature or going too many times a week will be counterproductive with any tan achieved fading fast and in all likelihood you will just look burnt.

Initial tanning sessions should be short and built up over time. One of the Urban Beauty team is always available at reception to consult with you and determine the optimal level of tanning your skin can handle for your next session. A perfect tan does not happen in one session but can be achieved over a sustained period to get you the results you need.

If you need a tan in a hurry for a special event, don’t try to rush it on the sunbed. Talk to a member of staff about our award winning, hypo-allogenic Vita Liberata treatments that will give you a natural looking glow to keep everyone guessing which foreign climate you’ve just got back from.

4. Go All Natural

Make the most of your minutes and remove all makeup, cosmetics and jewellery before you begin your session. Your skin needs to be completely clear for the UV light to penetrate.

5. Accelerate

As well as your daily moisturising routine, if you are preparing for a sunbed session, you might want to consider using an accelerator tanning lotion. Accelerator lotions can help you to build a base tan more quickly because they contain tyrosine, which allows the skin cells to produce slightly more melanin when the skin is exposed to UVB. They also contain vitamins (anti-oxidants) that can help prevent free-radical skin damage, associated with ageing.

6. Goggles On!

At all times keep your eyes protected from the heat in a sunbed with specialised goggles or eye globes. Never wear regular glasses or contact lenses as the glass warms in the sunbed which is highly dangerous for the eyes. If you’ve forgotten your goggles or it is your first time at the salon ask at reception for a pair.

7. Stretch

The best way to get a tan while laying on a sun bed is to put your arms up over your head for the first half of the session then down to rest at your side for the remainder of the tanning session.

8. Feed Your Glow

There is evidence to suggest that your diet could help you to achieve a natural, long-lasting tan. Foods, such as carrots, spinach and plums, could help because they are packed with antioxidant compounds known as carotenoids. When you eat these foods, many of those excess carotenoids are stored in the fat just underneath your skin, where their pigments peek through and give you a natural looking glow. An overall healthy diet helps your skin stay healthy and well-hydrated, which we know is key to achieving a beautiful, long-lasting tan.
